Israelis have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future governance of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location seems like home now and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis want the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported additional dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the south, health workers said.

The territory's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
