The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
