The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
