Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
