The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
