Far-Right Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming Head of State.
In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Centered On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly centered on promises to combat increasing violence and drastically reduce migration.
He consistently cited foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing camps, barriers, electric fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northern frontier.
Part of a Regional Wave
Numerous observers view Kast's win as fitting into a larger rightward trend in Latin America, coming after recent electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts further describe it as a part of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Clear Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative landscape might hinder his agenda, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not offered specifics.
"We have many things about how a Kast government will operate that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," commented a political professor.
The professor stated, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But the area with much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
