The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
