Can You Solve This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Forged the Contemporary Globe
There are many candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs to planks using almost no manual labor, the Dutch could construct ships faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, represented “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component converted its circular motion into vertical action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step each cycle.
“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine them so they acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each descending stroke and moving with each return stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic parts.”
Which brings us up to the current puzzle. I’d like you to reinvent a key the basic concepts behind this historic machine.
Circular to Vertical
Design a machine which converts rotary motion into up-and-down action. You have these items exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or sleeve into which a single the bars can slide snugly. (Consider that it is possible to put things on a base, so the components do not fall down.)
The solution returns later today UK time with the answer.
In the interim, PLEASE NO HINTS. Rather, feel free to suggest (less celebrated) contenders for the planet’s most impactful creation.
