A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
